Everbody loves a butterfly. Yay, butterflies. This one, a West Coast Lady (Vanessa anabella) allowed me time to take a number of photos as she sipped nectar from the statice. The larval food plants are mallows, such as cheeseweed and including hollyhock. Plenty of those around in our
urban gardens and empty lots, probably accounting for the relative abundance of this species as compared with the migratory V. cardui (painted 
lady) which we haven't seen a lot of in the past several dry years.
