Old stuff 2008 3: Cotinus mutabilis

August is the heyday of Green fruit beetles, aka fig beetles or peach beetles (Cotinus mutabilis). They like to eat fruit but my cotinus feed on lemon verbena flowers. Almost every beetle you see has scratches on its back (dorsal surface of the elytra) due to the many crashes it endures with solid objects like houses, vehicles, fences, and concrete driveways during its short but active life as an adult.
