When Common Name, Behavior and Doormat Intersect

The greybird grasshopper, Schistocerca nitens, also goes by the common name Vagrant grasshopper. This one showed up on my doorstep, literally, with a dry sounding plop. She camped out there for a bit as we walked around and over her to get in and out the door; then she wandered off to the nearby schefflera for a free meal. I think this species gets this name from its solitary habits, and also because it is a multiphagous herbivore, not being too picky about plant species it will feed on.
