The Reports of my Demise

I found this forewing of a giant swallowtail (Papilio cresphantes) among some garden litter, an apparent bird victim. While this individual has met its end, the overall population of this species is thriving in southern California as reported in the LA Times on 9/20, and confirmed by my own observation. These restless butterflies rarely stop long enough for me to grab my camera, and so while I have seen loads of them overflying the garden this year I haven't gotten any photos of them. I hold out hope they will grace my rue plants and/or my little kumquat tree with eggs next spring.
